Four pikes in a row

by on Jul.02, 2011, under Spinning, Tumsupe river

800g pike, caught on popper todayIt was a hot, partly cloudy and very windy day. I moved to the river at 4 PM only. On this place hot weather means active predator fish. Last year in july i had a lot of pikes and perches caught!

Went to my favourite spot, which produced 3 pikes and 2 perches in one hour. Pike weren’t giant unfortunately but one perch was ok. I wouldn’t be myself if i would have stopped at this moment. I still had plenty of time. I went on discovering the remainig river lower parts. It was hard, very few strikes but still successful. My popper worked very well and landed me a 800g (51cm) pike and a 280g (27cm) perch! Popper made my biggest fish and all adrenaline today (like it always does), while spinner made the biggest number of fish.

Heat at Tumsupe river

by on Jul.11, 2010, under Tumsupe river

The best result of the season so far insipe of the abnormal heat (4 pikes)Day1. On Saturday morning we went to the river with Jura at 8 AM, and were shocked – water was brown – no chance for catching anything, visibility in water was 5cm, but we tried and of course didn’t succeed.

Day 2. Many of you next day would probably skip fishing (it was +33°C and no wind), but not me! I woke up only at 11 AM and went to the river and it was already +30°C, burning sun and no clouds or wind whatsoever. Everyone (my dad) told me i won’t catch anything today, but i did catch and a lot (for Tumsupe river)! Approximately at 1 PM i found a nice place for popper and catched two undersize pikes after that no bites till i got to my favorite place at 3 PM and all remaining fish was caught there in a period of 30 minutes — shouldn’t have waisted time on other parts of the river.

First pike of the day (the smallest one), catched 12:00, +30°C, released to its natural habitat
Third pike of the day (the biggest one), catched 15:00, +33°C
Total for July 11, 2010

4 pikes (50 cm, 800g; 48cm, 650g); 3 perches (biggest 23cm, 200g). Total of 2kg

Season opener at Kanieris

by on May.02, 2010, under Spinning, Kanieris lake

I am holding an illegal size pike at lake Kanieris on May 2, 2010Today is official season opener at lake Kanieris for us (for everyone else it was yesterday). 🙂 It was a tough winter this year, and a lot of fish died at Kanieris, but i suppose that majority managed to survive.

At last me and Jura are at the lake this year full of hopes etc. So we were at the lake at 10 AM, which is too late, but not in the early spring. It was just fine — first fish landed the boat at 12:00. It was kinda weird, that Jura caught 3 pikes in 10 minutes from the same place, while i was finishing my sandwich with coke and watching with square eyes. It was weird, because pikes do not group usually. It looks as if they do actually group in spring after spawning. And yes, by the way, i was loosing 3-0 at that time.

I hate to loose any competition i am taking part in — fishing with Jura was also a challenge for me, that’s why i have tried my best to catch him, but third pike got away just near the boat. I did lost today. And i have to mention that all pikes were too small to keep them — all five released to their natural habitat!

Small river pike fishing

by on Aug.22, 2009, under Spinning, Tumsupe river

2 pikes and a perchIt was my second outing only in 2009 and i should say i wasn’t fishing for a couple of years at least. Denis visited me today, and agreed to make a little boat trip. We took a boat and went to the river and it was quite a lucky day! If you catch 1kg pike at this river – you are lucky!

The place is called Tumšupe (in translation from latvian means dark river). It has most common fish in Latvia: pike, perch, rudd and roach and some say trout (never seen one yet).

I shall try to update every week from now on.
